ESPN To Air A Ridulous Amount Of Manny Pacquiao Vs. Juan Manuel Marquez IV Stuff

So this is what the ESPN "marketing/programming agreement" with HBO Sports has given us, per a news release Wednesday: overload coverage across all the ESPN networks this week featuring of Manny Pacquiao Vs. Juan Manuel Marquez 4 Saturday on pay-per-view.

I suppose I should say "coverage," since some of this isn't about journalism and is, rather, straightforward marketing. It's the phrase in the news release announcing the deal back in September, and in the one Tuesday. As a journalism practitioner, it's sad to me that a business deal had to be reached for boxing to get this kind of play on "the worldwide leader." As a boxing fan, I love the exposure. But I also wish ESPN would care about boxing outside of this agreement.

Back in September, when the deal was announced a little bit before the middleweight pay-per-view clash between champion Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., ESPN didn't go quite as beserk as it's going for Pacquiao-Marquez 4. This was the gist of it:

"As part of the agreement, ESPN and ESPN Deportes’ news and information platforms, led by SportsCenter, will have access to key content and information surrounding marquee HBO Pay-Per-View boxing events, including fighter interviews.

In addition, ESPN Deportes Television and ESPN3- the company’s multiscreen network accessible online at WatchESPN.com, on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app and through ESPN on Xbox LIVE to Gold members- will carry live fighter weigh-ins plus pre- and post-fight press conferences for HBO-Pay-Per-View Events, as well as additional boxing content connected to these major pay-per-view events.

ESPN and ESPN Deportes will also televise the HBO all-access series 24/7 leading up to HBO Pay-Per-View fights. Starting this Thursday, Sept. 13 at 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2 will air the two-part 24/7 Chavez Jr. /Martinez back-to-back, immediately before ESPN Boxing: Friday Night Fights Special Edition live from Las Vegas at 10 p.m. In addition, ESPN Deportes’ Golpe a Golpe will preview the Chavez Jr. vs. Martinez fight at 9 p.m., while ESPN’s Bernardo Osuna will provide updates from both camps. ESPN Deportes will start televising the series starting with the next HBO Pay-Per View event."

For Pacquiao-Marquez 4, they are doing a good bit more. I've attached the news release below so you can get a sense of the full sweep of it, but also to give you the chance to tune in to whatever of it interests you. It kicks off in just a few minutes, actually.
