Nothing too deep here just some quick thoughts running through my otherwise empty mind…. I’m usually not one to say a fighter is shot but…. Boy did Rubin Williams look bad in his one sided beat-down at the hands of Chris Henry Wednesday night.¬ Williams once displayed promise back in 2004 but since being beaten to a pulp by Jeff Lacey has faltered in every fight against live competition.¬ On Wednesday night Chris Henry battered poor Williams around the ring before the corner of Williams mercifully threw in the towel to save him.¬ It was a good call on their part as Williams was not in the fight physically or mentally.¬ Had the fight gone longer Williams may have been seriously injured.¬ By all accounts it may be time for Williams to hang up the leather for good. Henry looked good but… Against the fighter formally known as Rubin Williams, Henry had better have won impressively especially given that the fight was in Henry’s hometown of Houston.¬ As for my assessment of Chris Henry, well, I though he looked good against the corpse of a fighter he was in with but it is unclear how he will do against other top ranked light heavyweights.¬ I like his work rate over the six rounds he fought and I was especially impressed with his dedication to body shots.¬ Henry seems to be a smart fighter and makes a welcome addition to the weight class.¬ Austin Trout On the featured undercard of Henry-Williams undefeated junior middleweight Austin Trout cruised to an easy eight round shutout victory over Tiki Barber look-a-like Byron Tyson.¬ Trout has decent speed and good fundamentals but what impressed me most is his poise and polish on front of the cameras.¬ This guy has the proverbial “it factor” and should he continue dominating may have a bright and marketable future within the sport.¬ One final thought on Wednesday Night Fights… Look I love me some Teddy Atlas but his continued habit of harping on fighters from the south and Midwest being in against soft competition is getting a bit tiresome.¬ If I’m not mistaken his beloved northeastern based fighters pad their records¬ against these very same soft touches.¬ So you can not criticize Chris Henry’s record by stating he has fought soft composition when fighters like Sechew Powell, Paul Malignaggi and Jaidon Codrington, and Mike Tyson¬all did the very same.¬ “Contender” lands on Versus network… Just like a determined cockroach the boxing reality series The Contender refuses to go quietly into the night.¬ ESPN is reporting that it is a done deal.¬ Good for Jeff Wald and the show as I consider the Contender a guilty pleasure of mine.¬ Weekend Fights… Tim expertly covered¬the Wladimir Klitschko – Tony Thompson fight from Germany this Saturday.¬ For the record I’m thinking Thompson may pull off the upset by late round TKO.¬ Also don’t forget that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will be fighting¬the over matched¬Matt Vanda on TV Azteca which marks a break in Top Rank’s “Latin Fury” PPV cards.¬ A more intriguing match is the co-feature that pits Ulises Solis defense of his IBF junior flyweight belt against Glenn Donaire.¬ Japanese sensation Koki Kameda will also be featured on the card.¬ ESPN’s Friday Night Fight’s will feature Tomasz Adamek against Gary Gomez in Chicago.¬ Expect a sea of Polish flags.¬
