My homie Yuriorkis Gamboa represented on ESPN2 Friday night with a knockout of Al Seeger that, while probably not a serious candidate for KO of the year, sure is on the short list of 2008’s most spectacular. I expect to see it on Sportscenter. Does it mean much? Nah. The 126-pound prospect was in against a boxer who hasn’t done much lately since contending four pounds south for a title in his previous most difficult fight, a one-sided loss to Daniel Ponce De Leon. What was more important was that Gamboa keep his goddam gloves up after disdaining the simple defensive maneuver and getting dropped his last time out by Darling Jimenez before retaking control. Gamboa did hold his gloves high for about half a round, so that’s progress. Seeger didn’t last but half a round, so how much progress is mysterious. But does “vaporizing” Seeger, to use the verbiage of the clip below, reinforce what a sensational talent Gamboa is, how exciting a prospect he is? You betcha.
