The Week’s Boxing Schedule, Such As It Is

The boxing schedule is late, which is partly a function of the fact that there’s not much on it, and partly a function of the fact that I’m on holiday (it’s been great, thanks for asking). There’s nothing on premium cable this week and few fights of note. Let’s just jump right into it, quick and dirty style.

  • Jamal James vs Juan Carlos Abreu, Friday, Bounce TV, Winter Park Fla. Al Haymon’s prospect-centred “Premier Boxing Champions” show features Minneapolis welterweight  James (17-0, 9 KO) against the Dominican Republic’s Abreu (18-1-1, 17 KO), who’s not to be confused with Argentina’s Juan Carlos Abregu.
  • Jeffrey Fontanez vs Marvin Quintero, Friday, Estrella/Ringtv.com, LA. This week’s installment of Golden Boy’s LA club show sees once-beaten lightweight Fontanez (16-1, 12 KO) take on gatekeeper/journeyman Quintero (27-6, 23 KO).
  • David Sanchez vs Luis Concepcion, Saturday, beIN Sports Español, Hermosillo Mexico. Probably the best fight of the week, with junior bantamweight #9 Sanchez (28-2-2, 22 KO) taking on former flyweight titleholder and big puncher Concepcion (32-4, 23 KO).
  • Jose Felix, Jr. vs Marcos Jimenez, Saturday, UniMas, Studio City. Much-ballyhooed Mexican lightweight prospect Felix (30-1-1, 24 KO) is still on the recovery train after a loss to Bryan Vasquez and a somewhat shaky showing against Yakibu Amidu. Jiminez (20-5, 13 KO) doesn’t figure to pose much of a problem.
