The Week’s Boxing Schedule, Featuring Terence Crawford, Dierry Jean And Joseph Diaz, Jr.

The picture above is of my face when there are no “Premier Boxing Champions” cards on TV all week. There’s only an HBO fight, a Golden Boy offering and (whaddayaknow) a ShoBox card on Showtime. Let’s party like it’s 2014!

  • Terence Crawford vs Dierry Jean, Saturday, HBO, Omaha Neb. Former lightweight champ turned top junior welterweight contender Crawford (26-0, 18 KO) takes on Montreal’s Jean (29-1, 20 KO) in a hometown showcase. That might sound harsh (because Jean is a legit contender with fast hands and decent power), but Crawford is something special. He’s cool, smart, skilled and at times downright mean. Newly thinned-down heavyweight prospect Andy Ruiz (25-0, 17 KO) fights trial horse Raphael Zumbano Love (37-11-1, 30 KO) on the undercard, Ruiz’s second fight in a month (a promising sign). If you can’t get enough of French Canadians being beaten up, Gennady Golovkin’s savage victory over David Lemieux will be replayed before this broadcast.
  • Rob Brant vs Louis Rose, Friday, Showtime, Phoenix. World Series of Boxing alum Brant (17-0, 11 KO) is just all round better than Rose (13-2-1, 5 KO), who is really a bit slow and hasn’t acquitted himself particularly well, even against the middleweight division’s lower orders.
  • Joseph Diaz, Jr. vs Ruben Tamayo, Friday, Estrella TV/Ringtv.com, Indio Calif. Lanky featherweight journeyman Tamayo (25-6-4, 17 KO) must be making it his mission to fight every 2012 Olympian. Coming off a fight with Mexico’s highly regarded Oscar Valdez, he’s in with American Diaz (17-0, 10 KO). A tall southpaw, Tamayo’s probably good enough to teach Diaz a few things and make him look bad in spots, but not good enough to win.
