Maybe, as a boxing fan, I’m just a fan of seeing people fall over. That might explain why I find this compilation of people fainting so funny. After rigorous scientific analysis, I’ve concluded that people falling over on their own is comical, but that it’s more satisfying to watch when they’ve been exchanging punches with someone. There’s a bit of punch exchanging to watch this weekend, but not much, and certainly nothing high level.
- Carlos Molina vs. Damian Frias, Friday, ESPN2, Miami Okla. Friday Night Fights’ season finale is a bit disappointing. If we’re going to call a spade a spade, the whole season has been, too. At least this week it wasn’t their fault. The show was meant to be headlined by a star-crossed bout between super middleweight prospects Don George (22-2-1) and Adonis Stevenson, which had already been moved from the undercard of the rescheduled Tavoris Cloud vs. Jean Pascal light heavyweight title fight. Now Stevenson has suffered a hand injury and will be replaced by Colombia’s Dionisio Miranda (21-7-2) and the bout will be bumped off the main event slot, as it well should be; Miranda has lost five of his last eight and was knocked out in the 1st round of his last fight. Not that the replacement main event, between junior middleweights Carlos Molina (19-5-2) and Damian Frias (19-4-1), is much better. Molina was controversially disqualified against James Kirkland in March and is looking to come back against Frias, who’s just not anywhere near the level of the crafty Texan. Better luck next year, FNF!
- The Rest. Amir Khan conqueror, welterweight Breidis Prescott (25-4) takes on Francisco Figueroa (20-4-1) in the other Miami on TeleFutura Saturday… On Saturday in Puebla, Mexico top junior lightweight Juan Carlos Salgado (25-1-1) faces Argentine contender Jonathan Barros (34-2-1), who controversially split a pair of fights with Celestino Caballero last year. Salgado is hugely overrated in my book, so Barros should make the most of the opportunity… Junior lightweight Joel Diaz (10-0), who was in one of the year’s better little fights against Guy Robb earlier this year, headlines on gofightlive.tv Saturday against Guillermo Sanchez (13-6-1)… Finally, TQBR favourite, hard-punching lightweight Jose “El Loco” Hernandez fights in Tacoma, Washington on Saturday. If you’re in the area, go along – the kid is non-stop action.
