As is often the case when the week’s boxing schedule is thin, we’ve got a cool historical image in the header. This week’s it’s a shot from a boxing gym in Porthaethwy, Wales, via the National Library of Wales. Apart from badass kids in towns with lots of consonants in their name, there’s not much going on this week. So I’m going to knock it over in short order.
- Austin Trout Vs. Daniel Dawson, Friday, ESPN2, Temecula Calif. Friday Night Fights’ season ender is a junior middleweight bout between a guy who is probably too good to be on FNF (Trout) against a guy who’s about right (Dawson). Which tells you pretty much how the fight will go, despite Trout’s (26-2, 14 KO) recent losses to Erislandy Lara and Canelo Alvarez. Dawson (40-3-1, 26 KO), to paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen, is no Canelo Alvarez (no matter what you think of Alvarez). Trout is going to box the limited Australian’s pants off.
- The Rest. So there’s not much else on, the best fight of the week (or at least the most evenly matched) is off TV, with Don “Da Bomb” George and Dyah Davis fighting in Chicago on Saturday… The only other televised show is on Fox Sports/Fox Deportes on Friday, with junior featherweight Manuel Avila and Sergio Frias headlining… Elsewhere, off TV, welterweight Mike Jones is making his comeback after being knocked out by Randall Bailey two (2!) years ago against Jaime Herrera.
