The Queensberry Rules will always have a soft spot for boxing kangaroos — not only are they an emblem of my country, they’re undeniably cool. In this case Fred Morley (the one without the tail) looks like he’s about to get his tail-less arse kicked. Anyway, inter-species fights of questionable ethical status are not really our concern, our concern is the schedule. It’s very thin this week, but there are a couple of monster weeks coming up, so calm your metaphorical farm.
- J’Leon Love Vs. Rogelio Medina, Friday, Showtime, Las Vegas. This week’s ShoBox is headlined by a perpetual prospect who’s not really that good anyway and was once busted using performance enhancing drugs. But don’t let that put you off. Super middleweight J’Leon Love (18-0, 10 KO) faces Rogelio Medina (32-6, 26 KO), a somewhat nifty Mexican journeyman/fringe contender who figures to show Love some rounds. Medina was already knocked out by Badou Jack (16-1-1, 11 KO). Jack, apart from sounding like a weird brand of cheese, is Love’s stablemate and is fighting the same night against Jason Escalera (15-2-1, 12 KO). Escalera is a real step down for Jack (bilingual pun alert, look it up), which is hardly surprising, since he was was shockingly KO’d in his last outing.
- The Rest. The ESPN schedule has slow and bleed-y Mexican junior welterweight Pablo Cesar Cano fighting on Friday night on Fox Deportes against Juan Pablo Lopez, but Boxrec knows nothing about it. Generally Boxrec is right in these situation, so expect a card featuring lesser lights on Fox… Cruiserweight hardman Marco Huck takes on Italy’s Mirko Larghetti in Germany, also on Friday. It’s a Marco vs. Mirko situation, and Mirko is going to get merked by the much more experienced Huck… There is no boxing on Saturday night so go treat yourself to beer with your friends… remember them?
