With a few big fights now in the rear-view mirror and pay-per-view coming up next week between Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara, the gods of boxing have chosen to take the week off. Sure, there are fights, and I’ll tell you what they are in a moment, but let’s just say you shouldn’t cancel your weekend plans.
Michael Farenas Vs. Mark Davis, Wednesday, ESPN2, Mashantucket Conn. Friday Night Fights were so confused by the dearth of quality fights that they moved to Wednesday this week. The card is headlined by junior lightweight Michael Farenas (38-4-4, 30 KO), a veteran Filipino contender best know for dropping Yuriorkis Gamboa en route to a unanimous decision loss, as well as drawing with the division’s #1 contender, Takashi Uchiyama. He’s taking on light-punching prospect Mark Davis (18-0, 5 KO). It’s a hell of a step up for Davis. On the undercard, Australia’s Billy Dib (36-3, 21 KO) moves up to junior lightweight to face Alberto Garza (26-7-1, 21 KO) in an effort to bounce back from last year’s KO loss to Evgeny Gradovich.
Michael Katsidis vs. Graham Earl, Thursday, Toowoomba Australia. Queensland is America’s Texas, a state with dangerously lax combat sport regulation. I’d say it’ll take someone dying to fix things up, but a boxer already died in 2010 and nothing happened. The British Boxing Board of Control urged someone to stop this fight happening for Earl’s safety. Katsidis has had brain injury concerns of his own. Ruslan Chagaev vs. Fres Oquendo, Saturday, Grozny Russia. Two of the lightest punching, least interesting heavyweight in recent memory fight each other. Joy.
