The Week’s Boxing Schedule, Featuring Daniel Jacobs And Peter Quillin

Godzilla, eat your heart out — badly Photoshopped Danny Jacobs and Peter Quillin are trashing New York! Oh God, the humanity! Apart the really bad poster, Jacobs vs Quillin on Showtime is an intriguing fight, and the best offering of the week. The undercard could be fun too. There are also various, less exciting cards happening — read on to find out more.

  • Peter Quillin vs Daniel Jacobs, Saturday, Showtime, NY. A nice match-up between the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board‘s #2 and #5 middleweights, respectively. Jacobs (30-1, 27 KO) is certainly the less proven of the two, having faced no true contenders since his knockout loss to Dmitry Pirog way back in 2010. That said, Quillin (32-0-1, 23 KO) hasn’t exactly faced the toughest competition, either. Jacobs will aim box from range and land hard right hands from the outside while Quillin will look to move in and out. Jacobs’ chin is probably the biggest question mark — how will he handle it when “Kid Chocolate” lands? On the undercard, Argentine Jesus Cuellar (27-1, 21 KO) faces Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Oquendo (26-4, 16 KO) in a featherweight fight that may well steal the show. Cuellar comes forward and throws with bad intentions, and it’s unlikely that Oquendo will back down. The Boricua will need to land hard punches between Cuellar’s looping shots if he’s to have any chance of coming away with the win.
  • Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr vs. Rafael Rivera, Saturday, HBO Latino, Kissimmee Fla. Puerto Rico’s Vazquez (24-5-1, 19 KO) looks to get things back on track after losing to Fernando Vargas by fighting Rivera (20-0-2, 14 KO). Only two of Rivera’s fights have been against opponents with winning records. Vazquez should be OK.
  • Jose Ramirez vs Johnny Garcia, Saturday, UniMas, Calif. A development fight for junior welterweight prospect and former amateur standout Ramirez (15-0, 12 KO), who shouldn’t have any trouble with Garcia (19-3-1, 11 KO).
  • Christian Gonzalez vs TBA, Thursday, RingTV.com/Estrella TV, Los Angeles. A Golden Boy junior lightweight prospect against the dreaded TBA. One for the desperate.
