There are just two (2!) televised fight cards this weekend, and neither is top flight. Polish light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara headlines a PBC on NBC card in his adoptive hometown of Chicago against a guy you’ve never heard of before, with a rematch between bantamweights Juan Carlos Payano and Rau’Shee Warren on the undercard. Not exactly the kind of event that screams “boxing on network TV.”
- Andrzej Fonfara vs Joe Smith Jr, Saturday, Chicago, NBC. There’s not much more to say about this one. Fonfara is a good light heavyweight — not amazing or flashy, but solid — and his opponent, Smith, has never fought anyone anywhere near the top of the division. On the undercard, former US Olympian Rau’Shee Warren gets a chance to avenge last year’s loss to Juan Carlos Payano. The first fight was close, fast and foul-filled.
- Carlos Ocampo vs Ramses Agaton, Saturday, Tijuana, beIN Sports Español. Local welterweight prospect Ocampo takes a step up against Agaton, an active south paw.
