We’ve just come off an action packed week of boxing. Perhaps too action packed, judging by the photo of Deontay Wilder and Bermane Stiverne above (via @jungrojo). This week might throw up some competition, though, with proven action star Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios set to do battle in the Mile High City. For that and more (well, one other fight) read on!
- Mike Alvarado Vs. Brandon Rios, Saturday, HBO, Denver. Welterweights Alvarado (34-3, 23 KO) and Rios (32-2-1, 23 KO) have given us two incredible wars, but have failed to impress since. So there are two ways to go into this fight; like our own Sam Sheppard, who believes that no matter how diminished these men are, they will go to war again; or like much of the boxing community, who view this as a gross cash-out from two future pudding eaters. It really could be either, but I think Rios wins in either scenario; Alvarado looks like a skeleton (and an unhealthy skeleton who was recently busted driving around with a gun at that). The undercard offers an interesting match-up of super middleweights, with Mexico’s Gilberto Ramirez (30-1, 15 KO) taking on Maxim Vlasov (30-1, 15 KO).
- Eric Hunter Vs. Rene Alvarado, Tuesday, Fox Sports 1/Fox Deportes, Philadelphia. Fox Sports plays host to a decent match-up of tarnished prospects, with Philadelphia amateur standout Hunter (19-3, 10 KO) playing host to Nicaragua’s Alvarado (21-3, 14 KO).
